While most view Manly Beacon from the viewpoint at Zabriskie Point, a hike up Golden Canyon offers a spectacular view of this geologic feature from below.

The badlands below Zabriskie Point are comprised of impermiable clay sediment deposited at the bottom of an ancient lake bed.  The nature of the material causes quick runoff and erosion from rainstorms preventing any type of plant life from taking a permanent hold.  The erosional patterns created by this runoff make for a fascinating landscape and beautiful foreground detail.
