Located in the Northern end of the valley floor, the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes have been formed by sediment from the Cottonwood Mountains to the North and Northwest.  The sand, made up of tiny grains of Quartz and Feldspar, has been shaped and is constantly shifting with strong winds sweeping through this section of the park creating beautiful crest lines and ripples in the sand.
